The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat has called for an end to sanctions against Zimbabwe.
In a press statement released Wednesday evening, Mahamat said he once again renews the longstanding AU demand for the immediate and unconditional lifting of sanctions imposed against institutions and individuals of the Republic of Zimbabwe.
“The AU Commission Chairperson remains extremely concerned by the negative impact of the unilateral sanctions to Zimbabwe’s sociology-economic development and the current global food and energy crises, including post COVID-19 recovery efforts,” the statement further said.
Faki further reaffirmed the continued commitment of the AU to support Zimbabwe in mobilizing efforts for the lifting of unilateral sanctions against the southern African nation.
Western nations imposed sanctions on Zimbabwe in the early 2000s in response to the southern African nation’s land reforms program which aimed to redistribute rural land from the white minority to the majority black population.
