Jokowi Responds to Suggestions to Dissolve KPK

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo responded to suggestions to dissolve the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). One of them came from the leader of the ruling party PDIP, Megawati Soekarnoputri.

“The institution is good. It has a good system, there is an OTT [sting operation] every month,” the President said at Brahrang Market in Binjai, North Sumatra, on Friday, August 25, 2023.

However, he acknowledged that the anti-graft agency needed to be evaluated and improved. “I think all institutions have shortcomings. I think that’s what should be corrected, evaluated,” he added.

Previously, Megawati claimed to have suggested to President Jokowi that the KPK be disbanded because she believed that it was ineffective in dealing with corruption.

“Just disband it. In my opinion, it’s not effective,” Megawati said at an event at The Tribrata, South Jakarta, on Monday, August 21, 2023.

PDIP Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto, meanwhile, denied the statement. He said Megawati’s statement had been twisted to defame the daughter of the proclaimer Sukarno and the party.

“So Ibu Megawati’s true statement was that she was the one who founded the KPK. Diverse efforts have been made to eradicate corruption, but it (corruption) is still the main problem of our nation,” Hasto said in Yogyakarta, on Tuesday, August 22, 2023.
